Pheonix from Disney's Mulan Crochet Pattern

 Hi my lovelies!

I was watching the new Mulan and I was just fascinated by the pheonix, the feathers, the colors, amazing. So I wanted to make it. Was it a bad idea? Yes. But do I love my results? Yes. This pattern uses a LOT more creativity than usual, the body/base form is the only place you really need to listen to me about, everything else is really up to you.

Materials:

Yarn, a bunch of different colors but at least two

Crochet hook

Some sort of stuffing (I used plastic bags from the grocery store)

Yarn needle

When making this pattern, we will need to use magic circle, half double crochet (hdc), single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc), as well as increasing and decreasing. When working in a circular pattern (for the entire base) close each row with a slip stitch and chain at the beginning, I won't be mentioning that in the pattern. Good luck!

Making the Base:

1) Using the color for the beak, hdc 8 into a magic circle

2-4) hdc all around

5) Using the main color of the bird hdc 2 stitches in each

6-8) hdc in all around

9) reduce by hdc 2 stitches into 1

10-12) hdc all around

13-14) hdc 2 in each stitch

15-17) hdc all around

18-19) hdc (reduce 2 stitches into 1 then hdc 3 normally) all the way around

20-21) hdc (reduce 2 stitches into 1 then hdc 2 normally) all the way around

22-23) hdc all around

24) reduce by hdc 2 stitches into 1

25) stuff and stitch in each stitch using yarn needle and pull to close

Head feathers:

So using whatever color(s) you want, chain three chains on top of the head when we started reducing to the neck. What I ended up doing was:

1) insert hook into existing stitch and pull through a loop from yarn

2) chain 1

3) hdc or sc into that original stitch

4) chain 1

5) tie off

6) using next color(s) repeat steps 1-5

But do whatever makes you happy. I left the tie offs out so they looked kind of firey as they frayed but hey, have fun with it!

Wings:

1) Using body color, hdc on existing body stitches from end of neck to tail

2) dc in each stitch

2) sc in first stitch, 5 dc in next, sc in next, 5 dc in next, repeat

3) using next color if you so wish repeat row 2, sc in the dips

4) using next color if you so wish repeat row 2 but hdc on the first and last hump

5-6) Around this point there is a lot of creativity, you could start making the humps separate just to give a more pointy, feathery effect, but I was really into the butterfly wing flower petal thing I had going on. At this point start doing slip stitches in the dips, and hdc instead of dc on the outer humps

7-8) using different colors each row, a hump will look like sc hdc dc hdc sc slip stitch in between. Tie off and there are your wings! If you want you can finish them with points on the tip.

Tail:

1) using the base color I chained a decent sized tail and dc all the way back to the body

2) chain using a different color on either side of the big tail, make them slightly shorter

3) beneath those, use as many colors as you want and chain to your heart's content

4) add eyes and...

You're done!

I hope you love this pattern, I certainly enjoyed making it. Please share it with your friends and lead them back to my blog for patterns, recipe's and more!

Bye!
