Beatrice the Flapper Bear Pattern

 Hello my Lovelies!

Sunday afternoon I was practically itching to crochet something. Have you ever felt that way before? The way you just want to knit or crochet? I found myself digging through the yarn stash to see if I had anything that sparked my interest and lo and behold I found it, or them I suppose I should say. I found a brown yarn and a fuzzy multi-pink yarn. A quick Pinterest browse later, I was inspired and ready. So here's how you make Beatrice, and who wouldn't? She's so cute! Beatrice would make an excellent present, decoration, or toy for kids (or maybe just for yourself ;) ).

Here's what you need:

-Yarn for the bear (I'm using brown)

-Furry yarn for accents (I'm using multi-pink)

-Yarn for the dress and gloves (I'm using pink)

-Yarn or string for details

-(It doesn't matter the size of yarn or needle and long as they match up, your size may be different than mine.)

-Stuffing (I used plastic bags to stuff mine as I ran out of stuffing and didn't realize it. Use whatever you please!)

Now the majority of this will be made in half-double crochet (hdc),  I will also have normal crochet (c). You will also need to know how to do a magic circle. This pattern uses a ton of circles and increase and decrease, if you aren't so sure how to do that, there are some wonderful videos out there to catch you up on the technique.

A few extra notes before we begin: close each row using a slip stitch (insert needle into first stitch, yarn over, and pull through) and chain before each row. As the majority of the pieces are formed circular, use this at the end of each row. And feel free to make this pattern your own! Adjust the position of each piece, the colors, even the type of yarn. Have fun!

Starting off with the head:

1) hdc 8 stitches into magic circle

2) hdc 2 stitches into each of the stitches

3) hdc (2 stitches in one, then 1 hdc normally) all the way around

4) hdc (2 stitches in one, then 2 hdc normally) all the way around

5) hdc (2 stitches in one, then 3 hdc normally) all the way around

6) hdc all the way around

7) hdc (decrease by combining two stitches to one, then 3 hdc normally) all the way around

8) hdc (decrease by combining two stitches to one, then 2 hdc normally) all the way around

9) hdc (decrease by combining two stitches to one, then 1 hdc normally) all the way around

10) hdc decrease by combining two stitches to one all the way around

Stuff your head, sew through the remaining stitches and pull to close. You'll want to add in the facial features, a nose, eyes, blush- have fun with it! To make the snout sew a circle around that region and pull the strings tight.

Now let's make two ears:

1) hdc 8 stitches into magic circle

2) hdc 2 stitches into each of the stitches

3) hdc (2 stitches in one, then 1 hdc normally) all the way around

4) hdc (2 stitches in one, then 2 hdc normally) all the way around

5) hdc (2 stitches in one, then 3 hdc normally) all the way around

6) hdc decrease by combining two stitches to one all the way around

Now fold them in half and stitch onto the sides of the head wherever you want them!

Next let's make the body:

This one will be very similar to the head.

1) hdc 8 stitches into magic circle

2) hdc 2 stitches into each of the stitches

3) hdc (2 stitches in one, then 1 hdc normally) all the way around

4) hdc (2 stitches in one, then 2 hdc normally) all the way around

5&6) hdc in all stitches

7) hdc (decrease by combining two stitches to one, then 2 hdc normally) all the way around

8) hdc (decrease by combining two stitches to one, then 1 hdc normally) all the way around

9) hdc decrease by combining two stitches to one all the way around

Finally let's stuff it and sew through the remaining stitches and pulling tight to close. Remember, you can always squish the shapes around until it's perfect for you! Feel free to start attaching to the body as we go!

Get ready for two feet:

1) hdc 8 stitches into magic circle

2) hdc 2 stitches into each of the stitches

3&4) hdc in each stitch all the way around

5) hdc decrease by combining two stitches to one all the way around

Finally we'll stuff, sew through each of the remaining stitches and pull to close.

Now let's do our tail:

1) hdc 8 stitches into magic circle

2) hdc 2 stitches into each of the stitches

3) hdc decrease by combining two stitches to one all the way around

Fold in half and stitch into place.

Time for arms (make 2):

We start off using pink yarn for the gloves at the end of the arms

1) hdc 8 stitches into magic circle

2) hdc (2 stitches in one, then 1 hdc normally) all the way around

3&4) hdc all the way around

5) (In brown yarn now) hdc all the way around

6) hdc (decrease in every stitch, two stitches to one)

Stuff and run a string through every stitch and pull to close. Attach accordingly.

Here is what you should have now:

To make the headband:

1) using fuzzy yarn make a chain that wraps all around the head
2) sc a second layer

3) join the two ends and place on our head

Finally the dress:

1) using pink yarn chain a string that fits around the bear's middle, just under the armpits

2,3,4&5) dc all around in each stitch

6) using fuzzy yarn hdc on the top and bottom of the dress, chain in sleeves if you would like and....

There you have it! Our darling Beatrice the flapper is complete! Feel free to decorate your creation with a string of pearls or a feather in her headband and keep the 20s roaring!

Bye!
